John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The Plot:

Legendary assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) has killed a high ranking member of the “High Table” – the ruling elite of the Assassin’s Guild.

With a $14 million dollar price on his head, Wick must survive long enough to find a solution to his dire situation.

Calling in favors, Wick discovers that those who help him will be severely punished by the “adjudicator” (Asia Kate Dillon).

As time runs out, Wick finds himself with a choice, remain under the thumb of the High Table or shun them and suffer the consequences – guess which one he chooses?

Kent’s Take:

“John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum” is an unrelenting and ultra-violent action film defined by intense, extended fight scenes.

Parabellum means to “prepare for war,” and this warning should be heeded. Wick is a wanted man for being forced to violate the sanctity of neutral ground (this occurred in “John Wick Chapter 2). Given an hour head start, he and we, realize very quickly that this is going to be a bloody affair.

As the hunt begins, audiences discover the intense creativity by which people can die. The opening fight scene in Chinatown taking place within a weapons museum is both startling and absolutely memorable.

The tone set in that scene, coupled with the non-stop action, perfectly defines the “John Wick” franchise. The fight scenes themselves are beautifully choreographed. Halle Berry’s Sophia has a pivotal role as a reluctant Wick ally. Sophia is an amazing character, like many of the other characters throughout this series. Wick is stoic and deadpan, so the multitude of characters that are allies and enemies are the creative, interesting personalities. Wick is simply an anchor for these fascinating people around which to orbit.

Wick creates such a huge body count in this film a suspension of reality is absolutely necessary. This also leads into the films weakness. The plot is very thin being simply a chase, but the inventiveness in the action elevates this film.

Angelica Houston’s character, The Director warns Wick against his dire path with, “How can you fight the wind? How do you crush a mountain?” Wick replies with few words and plenty of action.

“John Wick Chapter 3- Parabellum” is non-stop action, unapologetic and thoroughly entertaining. For those who can embrace the savage brutality will be rewarded with a memorable chapter of the John Wick story. If you want peace, prepare for war.
