St. Louis Community College offers a large variety of continuing education classes throughout the area including some do-it-yourself home improvement. Upcoming courses are:

• “Paint Like a Pro” will be held in one session on Wednesday, March 27, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Kirkwood High School. The cost is $25.

Learn how to prepare surfaces – what to use and what not to use, whether to prime with primer versus stain blockers. The instructor will also talk about techniques for texturing to make patches not look like a patch. Also, discover how to make the job easier and ways to keep cleanup easy and quick.

• “How to Use Power Tools” will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Florissant Valley campus. The cost is $25.

Power tools help perform difficult tasks with less effort and greater accuracy than without them. However, individuals must know how to use them effectively and without injury. In this class, a home repair expert will demonstrate the operation of several common power tools, including corded and cordless drill, dremel, reciprocating saw, miter saw and circle saw. Individuals may bring their small power tool if they’d like to know more about it.

• “Do It Yourself Ceramic Tiling” will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 7 to 9 p.m. at Kirkwood High School.

Learn how to repair, re-grout or install new ceramic tile and grout on floors and walls in the home. Distinguish between the different sizes of tile and why each are used in certain places. Also, learn how to design, layout, prepare, cut and install ceramic tile and grout. See the tools needed and watch a demonstration of how and why to use them.
