Wideman, Gale L., died Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
Beloved husband of JoAnne (nee Givens) for 45 years; loving father of Bradley (Sarah) and Matthew Wideman; adoring grandfather of Alison, Bradley Jr. and Theodore Wideman; dear son of the late Lois and Claude Wideman; dear brother of Robert (Connie), Brenda (Larry) Steelman and Gary (Julie) Wideman; dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend to many.
Gale earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Louis University and while attending law school was drafted and proudly served in the U.S. Army. After leaving the U.S. Army he met his wife JoAnne. They were married for 45 years and made their home in Kirkwood. He worked for the Social Security Administration for over 30 years.
He loved coaching Gary, Brad and Matt’s sports teams, especially basketball. He coached an AAU team which won a national championship. He was the assistant basketball coach for St. John’s High School girls’ team. He mentored many young men and women while coaching basketball and was proud of their many accomplishments.
During retirement Gale spent much of his time enjoying his family and grandchildren. He became an avid hockey fan when his nephews Chris and Alex began playing professional hockey. His kindness and generous spirit will be missed by all who loved him.
Visitation was Monday, June 10, 4 to 8 p.m., at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood. Funeral was Tuesday, June 11, 10 a.m. Interment, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorial contributions are preferred to Hope Hospice. www.boppchapel.com
