The South Clay Avenue overpass bridge in downtown Kirkwood, which allows motorists to bypass the railroad crossing when Union Pacific and Amtrak trains cross through Kirkwood, is closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The bridge was closed at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, and will remain closed until Kirkwood officials are certain it is safe or until repairs can be made.

A possible safety issue was brought to the city’s attention prior to the closing of the bridge, and a structural engineer has been contacted to assess the bridge’s structural integrity. When a decision has been made, the public and the media will be notified immediately.

Detours: Motorists traveling along Kirkwood Road in both directions can bypass the railroad tracks by detouring to Harrison Avenue on the west side and to Taylor Avenue on the east side.
