Dozens of Webster Groves High School band students and alumni joined together to give longtime WGHS Band Director Dane Williams a surprise send off and well wishes for his retirement on Monday, May 11.

Students, parents and colleagues had hoped to send Williams off with a little more fanfare, but given COVID-19, opted for a surprise car parade instead. Cars lined up and down the parking lot behind the school while Williams was inside packing up some of his belongings. As a colleague helped him carry some boxes to the car, dozens of decorated cars came parading down Selma Avenue in front of Webster Groves High School.

Band music blared from some of the cars while horns honked and people shouted and waved to Williams, who said he was shocked to see the parade coming down the street. Some students even leaned out of their car windows playing their instruments — a perfect tribute to the band director who has taught music for more than 30 years in the Webster Groves School District.

For those who weren't able to make it to the parade, but would like to send Williams well wishes on his retirement can do so at The link will be live until Wednesday, May 13.
