Police have charged Lindbergh Schools middle school teacher James B. Wilder III with six felony counts of second-degree statutory sodomy stemming from a relationship he had with a high school student in the 1990s.

Wilder, 47, who taught at Sperreng Middle School and is listed on the district’s website as the co-coach of the Lindbergh High School girls track, field and cross country teams, was led away from Sperreng Middle School in handcuffs Tuesday afternoon and was charged late Wednesday morning. He is being held in the St. Louis County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The charges were issued after police investigated allegations the victim brought forward this summer concerning a long-term sexual relationship between the victim and Wilder from Aug. 1, 1996, to Sept. 21, 1997, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

“At that time, the 16-year-old Lindbergh High School sophomore advised that she was coached by Wilder, who was the girls cross country and track coach, and they developed a mentor/student relationship with him,” a written statement from the police department said.
