The Webster Groves School District has renamed one of its elementary schools in honor of Dr. Henry Givens Jr.
The school had been named the Webster Groves Elementary Computer School since it opened in the 1980s.
Principal Howard Fields said that members of the school community had talked about a new name for several years since all district schools offered technology today and the word "computer" itself is outdated.
A school committee recommended the name be changed to honor Givens, who had been a teacher and principal of Douglass School before he went on to become an assistant commissioner for the state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and more recently, president of Harris-Stowe State University.
