Steelville: Floating Capital & Arts Center
August 24, 2018
Steelville, dubbed "The Floating Capital of Missouri" due to its proximity to the Huzzah, Meramec and Courtois rivers, is also looking to be the arts center for central Missouri.
Floating The Rivers
Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the area to get away and float, raft or canoe the rivers.
The small town offers numerous options to outfit those adventures and for lodging after a long day of river fun.
Kick'n K Farmhouse & Arena, overlooking the Meramec River, has two vacation rental homes – an 1899 farmhouse which sleeps up to 10 and Sunrise Cabin.
Bass River Resort features canoeing, kayaking or rafting trips on the Courtois, Huzzah and Meramec rivers, plus riverside camping along the Courtois River, RV sites and cabins for groups from two to 20 people. Activities include horseback riding, swimming in its pool and more.
Spend the weekend in a cozy log cabin (with mineral hot tub) in a country setting at Gill Ridge, located four miles from Steelville.
Eleven miles south of Steelville, escape to Fair Winds Cabin Resort. It features five cabins on over 120 acres of woods.
Through Gallery Zeke and the Meramec Music Theatre, the Steelville Arts Council brings artists, events, musicians and other talented groups to the region.
Gallery Zeke is hosting the 2018 Show-Me Quilt Show from Sept. 1-8. Quilts will be on display 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From Sept. 13-19, the exhibit "Shutter Bugs" will display the work of area photographers. Art Squared Fundraiser (Fifty – Fifty) follows from Oct. 4-27 with works by 50 artists, culminating in a final auction and reception on Oct. 27, 4 to 8 p.m. In November, the gallery will feature the Steelville Ceramic Art Festival.
Built in 2001, the 600-seat Meramec Music Theatre is dedicated to bringing the musical and performing arts to Steelville. It features the best in country music and golden oldies, as well as many special performances. Upcoming concerts include the Lefevre Quartet on Sept. 15, Bill Anderson on Oct. 20 and "Celebrate America" Patriotic Show with The Lesters & Chosen Ones on Nov. 10.
