Social media was abuzz and news reports were plentiful after it was learned last week that the National Rifle Association would be marching in this year's Webster Groves Community Days Parade.
"As the nation's oldest civil right organization, our participation in the Webster Groves parade demonstrates our commitment to the community as well as the freedoms upon which our nation was founded," according to an NRA statement.
Reliance Bank, with locations in Des Peres, Rock Hill and Webster Groves, is the sponsor of this year's parade. The bank reports that it became caught in the middle of this year's NRA parade controversy.
"We recently learned that the NRA will be participating in this year's parade and received emails with concerns about this matter," according to a July 2 statement from Reliance. "Reliance Bank takes no political stance and has no right or responsibility in selecting parade participants. We support all of the communities we serve and are the parade sponsor to support the Webster Groves community."
At the request of Webster Groves Police Department, the NRA agreed that no one participating in the July 4 parade would carry a weapon.
